What is "Configure Prompts" in a Query?

In the Queries page, for every query I see a Configure Prompts link in the last column. But when I click on it I get “this query has no prompts”. What is a prompt and how do I add one?

When you build a query using Query Builder you can add conditions, for example if you want to only see customers in California you can add that as a condition (State is equal to California) in the Filter of the query. This filter is applied on the server side and only records that satisfy the condition are sent to the browser. If you have tens of thousands of records setting this filter improves performance as it limits the number of records fetched.

That’s well and good but what if your user wants to see California customers one minute and Washington customers the next? If the value California is embedded in the query then the query is only going to return California customers. What you want to do is to set the query to prompt the customer for the value instead of embedding a specific value such as California in the query. To do that, click the triangle to the left of the filter condition and select “Prompt user for value”. Now when this query is used you will get a text input where the user can type in a value such as California or Washington.

You may want to display available values in a dropdown. To do that click the Configure Prompts link for the query. You can see all prompts belonging to the query, and you can supply available values for each of those prompts.
